From the second she saw him, Layla Barros knew Nico Soltero was all wrong. Wrong age. Wrong education. Wrong job. Wrong everything. She had a hard enough time convincing her parents that New York really is the right place for their nineteen-year-old daughter without telling them she’s got a thing for the FedEx guy at her new part-time job. Too bad the second she saw him, Layla Barros no longer cared about right and wrong.
Raised with three siblings in Hell’s Kitchen by a single-mom, half Puerto Rican, half Italian Nico Soltero is a quintessential New York mutt who’s always had to shoulder the burdens of his family. Burdens which have cost him almost all of his dreams, like going to college or becoming an FDNY firefighter. Now, at twenty-six, he’s finally getting the chance to leave the place that’s always felt more like a dead weight than the center of the universe. Too bad the city of his birth has one last hard knock to deal: the girl of his dreams, sitting right in the middle of his delivery route, three months before his plane is supposed to take off.
As Layla and Nico find out, love isn’t always convenient, and it never happens how they planned. The choices that Nico and Layla make now will affect their lives forever. Will they make them together or apart?
Chick and Brain Rating 5 out of 5
Nicole French has slowly become one of my all time favorite authors. I count down the days until she releases her next book. When I finished the Spitfire trilogy I was desperate for more, but Bad Idea is far beyond anything than I could have imagined.
Layla is a college student who is still trying to find her way in the world. She has escaped from her parents back in Washington to New York City, but is still being held tightly by their beliefs and ideas about what is best for her. She tries desperately to find out who she is and where she came from and in the process find the one person that can help her become who she wants to be Nico.
Nico is the oldest in a family of not so motivated individuals that live on the wrong side of the city. One day he runs into the most gorgeous woman he has ever seen on his FedEx route. They both know it is a bad idea, he is on his way to bigger and better things in LA and she has to head back home to WA at the end of the semester, but neither can deny the attraction they have for one another. Should they try to fight the chemistry they have for one another or see where this bad idea can lead them even if it is only for a little while?
Layla and Nico’s story is raw and real. It’s about real life situations and life issues that we must all deal with every day. French was able to take personal experiences and real life people and create a story from the heart. I fell in love with Nico, I even fell in with Layla which is not the usual for me. My heart soared with their triumphs, and broke with their heartbreak. Even if you saw you are not an emotional reader, this book with touch the depths of your soul.
Nicole French has a way with words that very few other authors do and this book has solidified that point for me. That ending… French kills me with these ending she leaves us begging to know what is going to happen with these characters that we have grown to love so much. Just like all the greats do. Nicole French is destined for greatness, and I am honored to be able to say that I was here from the beginning. Now it time to hang on and enjoy the ride.
