Book Review: The Edge of Us by Veronica Larsen

Goodreads Synopsis:

Eight years ago, Cole Van Buren left me at the altar without a single explanation. My heart’s been at a standstill ever since, the anger keeping me from moving on. Keeping me from seeing the man who’s been right in front of me all this time…

Andrew’s been the friend I needed, the one constant through the hardest times of my life. But one night, the lines blur and we’re tipped into something more. Just when I’m ready to explore what we could be…

My ex comes back.

Cole says he didn’t come to get me back, but I should know better. The answers he dangles overhead are the ones I need to finally let go.

Except there’s no such thing as closure, only a past that wants to pull you backward.

I have received this ARC in exchange for an honest review

Veronica Larsen is a first time author for me, but I seem to keep hitting the jackpot when it comes to first time reads. Larsen writes a heartbreaking and realistic story about how one decision has the ability to damage so many lives. She uses her words to create vivid pictures that capture us mind, body, and soul from the beginning. Every emotion of her characters leap off of the pages and we are able to feel them our own.  The edge of us is about Mila, a successful business woman who on the outside seems like she has everything she has ever wanted. In reality Mila has been damaged almost beyond repair by the one man who swore to love her forever, Cole Van Buren. Cole knew he was not good enough for Mila, and everyone made a point to tell him regularly. He was not always a great man, but for Mila he was willing to try. One bad decision cost both of them everything, and now Cole has come back to make amends. The only question is whether Mila is ready to listen.

Larsen creates characters that we are unable to ignore. We want to hate Cole for what he has done to Mila in the past, but we eventually find our hearts breaking for both of them when we hear his story. We want Mila and Andrew to stop playing games and just get it on already, but as we read we discover the pain and heartache they are both using each other to hide behind. All of Larsen’s characters tell a story, and all of them lead back to Cole and Mila. If anything, Cole and Mila deserve their happy ending but they need to let their hearts and not their heads make the decisions. Everyone has been telling both of them what is best for them their entire lives, and now finally they are ready to make that decision for themselves.

As you make your way through this story, we are constantly surprised by the next even that takes place. By the ending we are left emotionally raw. It is journey that we must take with these characters to understand the ending, because without the journey the destination doesn’t matter. This was another gut wrenching read for me. I am left with a hangover of sorts. There is no cliffhanger but we are all left wanting to know the rest of the story. Every character in this book deserves to have their story told. I know I would be the first in line to read those books. I will definitely add Larsen to my list of authors to watch. I am excited to see what she has in store for us next.

Until next time,
