Book Review: Mother of Shadows by Meg Anne

Goodreads Synopsis:

Helena’s life had always been quiet. In fact, she liked it that way. When her childhood friend returns home and tells her that she is the prophesied ruler of the Chosen, those blessed with the gift of magic, her quiet life goes up in flames. Suddenly Helena finds herself surrounded by a circle of protectors, each having sworn their loyalty to her since her birth. All except for one: her Mate. It’s not enough that she learn how to use her magic and undergo a trial to prove her worthiness; in order to claim her title, Helena must also find the man who carries the other half of her soul. Exiled due to a past he had no part in, Von is the last man the Chosen expect Helena to select. Despite their protests, his soul calls to hers and there’s no denying that he was made for her. But the prophecy stands and all isn’t as it seems. There’s an enemy lurking within plain sight who will stop at nothing to destroy her.

I have received this ARC in exchange for an honest review

There are no words for Meg Anne. From what I have been able to dig up, this is her first novel. Yea I wave the BS flag on that one! Her writing is captivating and creates a world that we can not help but want to become lost in from start to finish. Mother of shadows focuses on Helena. Helena believed that she was a farm girl with no magical powers, unlike everyone else, but when her friend returns from the capital her world is turned upside down. She is destined to lead her people surrounded by those sworn to protect her. Von is the exact opposite. He has had to fight for everything that he has in life. Von and Helena are destined to be together. They are the other half of each others soul, but their relationship hangs by a tentative thread. One wrong step and the world they live in will literally come crashing down around them .

Not only is this a love story, but it is about the journey Helena must take in order to lead her people. Helena must be strong not only for herself but for her people. In order to do so she needs her mate Von in more ways than one. He is truly the other half of her soul, where he is dark she is light. Although Meg Anne writes us an insta-love story, this is more than that. Von and Helena’s connection goes beyond matter of that heart but truly speaks of souls that are fated to be with one another. We also have our share of action and adventure along the way. Helena is not your typical “princess” no matter how much her Chosen would love her to be. She is the type of female character we all would love to be. She is strong and does not stop other from attempting to defeat her. Meg Anne writes a story that is not only captivating but that reaches a part of your heart. By the time you finish reading, you are emotional spent. I could not put it down, so I went back and read it all over again looking to see if there was something I missed. I just wanted more by the time I was finished, and that is an example of an amazing book.

We all want to be Helena. We want to be able to fight for what is right, and be able to protect the ones that we love most in the world. With an ending like that, you can imagine that I am impatiently waiting for the next installment to be released. If you are looking for a fantasy romance that has everything from dragons to fair maidens then this is the story for you.

Until next time,
