Book Review: The Darkest Sunrise (The Darkest Sunrise #1) by Aly Martinez

Goodreads Synopsis:

Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Whoever coined that phrase is a bald-faced liar. Words are often the sharpest weapon of all, triggering some of the most powerful emotions a human can experience.
“You’re pregnant.”
“It’s a boy.”
“Your son needs a heart transplant.”
Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me.
Syllables and letters may not be tangible, but they can still destroy your entire life faster than a bullet from a gun.
Two words—that was all it took to extinguish the sun from my sky.
“He’s gone.”
For ten years, the darkness consumed me.
In the end, it was four deep, gravelly words that gave me hope of another sunrise.
“Hi. I’m Porter Reese.”

Chick and Brain Rating 5 out of 5

I have received an ARC  in exchange for an honest review

There no words for the emotions that I am feeling at this moment. The Darkest Sunrise is an emotional roller coaster from start to finish. We are happy, sad, angry, and then just down right devastated by the end of this story. I honestly do not think I have fully processed my emotions and it has been almost 24 hours since I finished reading, that is the sign of an amazing story.

This story centers around two very broken and damaged individuals. Charlotte  believed that she had found her calling in being a mother, but that was all shattered the day her son Lucas was taken. She never gave up hope that her beloved son would be found, but after many years the case goes cold and so does any hope of finding her son alive. Charlotte shuts out the world and becomes an amazing doctor but she is missing the one thing she has always wanted in the world, a child. Porter is at his wit’s end. He is a single father to two children, and his son Travis is in desperate need of a heart transplant in order to live. Porter’s last hope is Charlotte and her amazing skills as a doctor, but she refuses to treat children. Porter will not take no for an answer, so he comes to beg Charlotte in person for her help. Once these two meet, they notice that they have more in common than they initially believed. Slowly they begin to heal the pain and loneliness heal festering in each others hearts, that is until a single event happens to threat the peace that they both have fought so hard to create. Will Porter and Charlotte be able to fight for the light and hope they have created in each other or will they fall back into the darkness.

Aly Martinez’s writing is magical. It weaves a story of darkness and pain that consumes the soul. From the first sentence Martinez is able to reach us on an emotional level and not let go. This is a very raw and emotional story for any reader, but as a parent myself I cannot fathom what either of these two characters could possibly be going through. The insurmountable amount of pain and darkness that Charlotte and Porter must feel regularly can only be soothed by the each other. These two need each other both for themselves but also to save Porter’s son’s life. This story grab us on an emotional level with characters that take residence in our hearts for the long haul. Neither of these two will be characters that I will be forgetting in the near future.

Martinez ensures that you will be on pins and needles waiting for the next installment of the series with the ending. To say that it is cliffhanger is an understatement. You will surely be begging for more.

Until next time,
