Review: Behind the Wall: A Novella – Jane Harvey-Berrick

Goodreads Synopsis:

The place where dreams fade and hope dies.

That’s what it’s meant for the five years that Garrett has been behind bars. But now hope is on the horizon and he’s daring to dream again: small dreams, small hopes.

Getting his GED would be a start. If only his prison-appointed teacher Miss Ella Newsome wasn’t so damn sexy.

As Garrett and Ella start to play a dangerous game, the price could be higher than either of them have guessed.

This story first appeared in the anthology HOT FOR TEACHER in 2016. It has since been extended with new scenes, more heart ache and even more heat

Chick and Brain Rating 4.5 out of 5

I have graciously received this ARC in exchange for an honest review

Let me first say that this is not my usual read. I tend to stay away from anything that has to do with being in prison or confined in any way because it is always depressing, but I was given the opportunity to read this in advance so I was not going to pass that chance up.  Harvey-Berrick did an amazing job of keeping the focus away from the depressing aspects of being in prison, but more importantly on the hope of what lies behind. These amazingly written characters will remain with us through out our days along with the lessons that Harvey-Berrick strives to teach us through this story. This is a story of hope and redemption for everyone involved, but most importantly it reminds us all not to judge a book or in this case a person by its past mistakes. We have all made them, what is important is what we learn from them.

This novella mainly focuses on Garrett and his quest to get his GED before he gets out of prison. What he was not expecting was Ella Newsome. Ms. Newsome was to be there GED teacher, but she called to Garrett in a way that no one ever had. She makes him wish he was a better man, she makes him want to be a better man, but more importantly she helps him dream of his future. The two of them are able to find purpose in their dull lives with their time spent with each other. Harvey-Berrick is able to maintain a very slow burn love story for these two characters throughout the entire novella while also focusing on Garrett and his quest to become a better person for both himself and Ella.

Although this novella is about one person and their quest for happiness, we all can learn something. Harvey-Berrick is able to make us all stop and think about the preconceived notions that we have about a person and their character. It drives all of us to be a better person and to treat others, all others no matter what their circumstance, how we wish to be treated. Although we get an amazing lover story between Ella and Garrett, this is the main purpose of the novella. To get us thinking about all the people we over look and discount because of where they came from and to hope that we learn to strive to be better.

Until next time,
